This is the first post in a very long time. I've been hesitant to put any of my nearly finished pastel paintings on the blog. I should do so. This is the first piece of art that I've finished for a while. It was supposed to be a three day project that lasted three weeks. Most every artist draws at least one tiger, and that is because they're fun to draw! Great colors and lines... and they're relatively easy. So here is my contribution to the vast genre of tiger drawings...

Pow Wow Dancer
This summer I hope to work on drawing portraits more accurately and landscapes more abstractly. This is a drawing based on a photograph that I took of one of the dancers at the 2012 Chumash Pow Wow.

A third pelican
This is the third and final pelican that I've recently drawn. I'm hoping to create a composition incorporating all three poses. Thanks to my friend, Paul Bronstein for allowing me to use his photos as reference. I was experimenting using watercolor paper which was not the best choice.

Oso Flaco Morning
Since we live so close to the Guadalupe Dune Preserve, I am anxious to develop a portfolio of the region. I have been visiting these dunes pretty much all of my life, and I enjoy it as much now as when I was a boy of ten. In fact, sometimes I feel like a boy of ten when I visit it. I won't say whether or not I roll down the steep dune sides.

Three Pelicans
I started these three pelicans several years ago and let them sit in a drawer for a long while. Pulled the drawing out a couple of weeks ago to finish it up. I had hit an obstacle because I had not figured out what exactly the birds are sitting on. As it stands -- or as they sit -- the back two are supposed to be on a waterlogged log, and the closest one on a rock. I may add more contrast to the rock. What do you think?

Two to Go
These two pieces were donated this week to support a fundraiser for the Alzheimer Foundation. One is a photograph of Coyote Brush (shot in my backyard) and the other is a study that I'm doing for a painting of three pelicans.

Up For Bid
Each year, I try to donate some art to our school's silent auction. This year I am donating this pelican done with pencil on black paper. It is a study for a painting that I plan on doing with three pelicans.

Mule Ear Texas
This painting is of a place I've never been to, Mule Ear, Big Bend National Park, Texas. The painting was done from a photograph by Megan Time, although anyone that has ever visited Mule Ear, may not recognize it. Thanks, Megan.

Iris
I realized that I haven't posted much to this site, I'm going to try to do so more often. I'll start with this Iris which I just finished for a pastel class I'm taking in Santa Barbara. I love the picture simply because the photo it is based on was taken on a trip to Japan. I visited a temple that was well known in Japan for its Iris. It was a great experience!
